The Department of Ophthalmology Taking Up New Challenges
Paediatric cataract and squint surgeries and many other ocular procedures are being conducted at the Department of Ophthalmology, Dr D.Y. Patil Medical College & Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune.
Recently a 6-month-old girl child presented to the hospital with an ordeal of blindness in both her eyes. The child was suffering from congenital rubella syndrome which is a congenital infectious disorder resulting in bilateral congenital cataracts. The child was blind in both her eyes and prospects of vision in the future were severely hampered if this condition was not addressed at the earliest. The baby was evaluated and examined by Dr Parikshit Gogate, an eminent paediatric ophthalmologist and Assistant Professor at the Department of Ophthalmology. The patient’s parents were counselled about the prognosis and explained with constant guidance of Dr Renu Magdum, Head Of Department of Ophthalmology, cataract extraction of both eyes was successfully done simultaneously.
Due support was provided by the hospital authorities and the patient was provided free of cost treatment under Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana (MJPAY) resulting in good visual rehabilitation.
The Department is taking up such challenging and complicated procedures quite frequently and has been applauded by various members of the faculty for the same.
