Dr. D.Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre successfully performed Heart and Lung transplants on a Doctor suffering from Scleroderma
Dr. D. Y. Patil Medical College, Hospital and Research Centre, Pimpri, Pune successfully performed a heart and lung transplant on a 46-year-old Doctor from the U.K., who was diagnosed with Scleroderma, a rare autoimmune disease. She had developed am interstitial lung disease and other complications that required heart and lung transplant surgery.
Under the expert leadership of Dr. Sandeep Attawar (Program Director and Chair, Institute of Heart & Lung Transplantation, KIMS, Hyderabad), Dr. Anurag Garg, Dr. Ashish Dolas, Dr. Ranjit Pawar, Dr. Prabhat Dutta, Dr. Vipul Sharma, and Dr. Sandeep Junghare performed the transplantation surgery that lasted for 6 hours. It was a critical and complicated surgery that involved carefully coordinated teamwork involving several medical specialities and support services. Dr. M.S. Barthwal (HOD, Respiratory Medicine) also shed light on patient's critical condition, her complicated medical history, the difficulty of this surgery, and how the experts overcame everything to give her a new life.
